On-lead vs off-lead dog walks

Off-lead looks free. On-lead looks strict. Reality is messier: livestock, cyclists, nervous dogs, and signs that actually mean something.

When on-lead is the right call

Busy streets, unknown recall, new places, sheep country, and anywhere a sign or byelaw says so. In the UK, follow local rules and common sense around livestock. The UK government guidance on dogs and the countryside is a sensible baseline.

When off-lead can work

Secure fields, quiet open spaces, a dog who comes back when life gets interesting. "Interesting" includes squirrels, other dogs and that one person eating a sandwich.

Enrichment either way

A long lead on a sniffari can feel freer than a chaotic off-lead sprint that ends in a confrontation.

Patch

GPS walks work on-lead or off. Territory is about the path you take, not whether the clip is open. See what a dog walking game is if you are new to the map.
