What is a dog walking game?

Most dog apps do one of two jobs: log the walk, or help you hire a walker. A dog walking game is a third thing. It still uses GPS. It still cares that you went outside. The difference is the map becomes something you and other dogs can fight over, street by street.

The short version

You walk your dog. The ground you cover gets claimed on a shared neighbourhood map. Other walkers can take it, hold it, or ignore it. Packs, leaderboards and personal records sit on top of that.

No fantasy levels. The board is the pavement outside.

How it differs from a dog walk tracker

A classic dog walk tracker answers distance, time and how often you went. Fine if you want breed goals, streaks or a fitness log.

A dog walking game can still show those numbers (Patch does). It also asks a second question: who holds this street right now?

If you only want the log, skip the boards. Decent apps let you do that.

Why territory works for dog walks

Dogs already treat walks as a tour of interesting ground. Owners already clock who else is out. A territory layer just makes that visible:

  • Gold (or your colour) for ground you hold
  • Contested colours when someone else has been through
  • Grey for streets nobody has claimed yet

Close a loop and apps like Patch fill the middle too. The long way home claims more than a straight out-and-back. People start picking routes for the shape, not only the distance.

What to look for

If you're shopping around:

  1. Does territory expire on a timer? Decay keeps people opening the app. It also turns walks into guilt. Patch only loses ground when another dog walks through.
  2. Can you skip the rivalry? Some people hate neighbourhood leaderboards. The app should still work as a walk record.
  3. Is it built around dogs? Generic step-and-conquer games exist. Packs, sniff spots and dog-sized movement goals are the giveaway.

Where Patch fits

Patch is free on iOS and Android. Walks claim streets. Territory stays until another dog takes it. Chase the local board if you like, or never open it and keep a map of everywhere you've been together.

If that sounds like the walk you already do, with a reason to take one extra left turn, you're in the right place.
