Evening dog walk safety tips

Evening walks are when a lot of dogs get their main outing. They are also when drivers see you late, cyclists move fast and foxes do weird things in the middle of the road.

Be visible

Clip-on lights beat hoping drivers "should have seen you". A light on the lead or harness helps when your dog decides the hedge needs inspecting.

Pick boring routes

Well-lit streets beat the scenic cut-through after 9pm. Save the woodland path for weekends.

Headphones

One ear max, or none. You need bike bells more than a podcast climax.

If you play Patch

Evening is peak rivalry time. Contested teal shows up after other people finish work. Reclaiming a street is fine. Walking into traffic for a patch is not. Read contested ground explained when it publishes, or start with the basics of how territory works.

Try it on your next walk

Download Patch free on iOS or Android. Tap once when you leave, walk as normal, and see what ground your dog claims.

There's unclaimed ground outside right now.

Download the free dog walking game on iOS and Android. Your first patch takes about four minutes.
